SESSION 4 - RESOLUTION — Project Statement

Along with geodesic domes, the more complexly shaped domes quickly spread through the communes of the American Southwest in the late 1960s. Inflatocookbook was Art Farm’s contribution to “searching out a means, a way of doing, a spacial expression of alternatives to the rigid architectural paths we were lead down as children.” It provided the reader with “images of what environment can mean when a person takes it in his own hands, feeling it and modeling new forms.” Quick, cheap, lightweight, and easy to use, polyethylene construction also importantly involved the user in all phases of projection, making it “a medium for learning about the whole design process.” Offering recipes (plans and instructions) for air-supported structures, along with information on materials, construction, head loads, safety, anchoring, and the fans needed for inflating pneumatics, Inflatocookbook was Ant Farm’s “attempt to gather information and skills learned in process and organize them for easy access.”

Session 4 continues the momentum of past efforts and our first hand experiences of the dynamic conditions of liminal boundaries between water and land at the Great Salt Lake. The primary objective of the studio now is to further catalyze an operative knowledge of site conditions into synthesized proposals of the GSLEP base station that we can realize in detail. The time has come to resolve specific decisions, work with known data, and propose an engagement of landscape—architecture—landscape. For this it is vital we remain focused on the primary questions at hand, to avoid distractions, and insure performative progress of our work. Remember William Carlos Williams adage “there are no ideas but in things.” It is vital our synthesis is put forward in testable means through detail drawings, models and texts. Evidence abounds. Make it real and use it as we move forward.


  • Synthesis of clear positions and intentions manifest in tangible evidence.
  • Actualized modes of realization — material, physical and perceptual — aiding the design process.
  • Clear development of project conditions/proposals — site and program.
  • Developed project proposal engage human and regional scales.

Programmatic Requirements

  • GSLEP storage space with deployable access to water and road (via trailer).
  • Storage for all GSLEP components (tubes, pipe, PV panels, infrastructure) unassembled and ready for trailer deployment - 1,000 sq. ft. Component storage both on and off trailer.

  • GSLEP maintenance and service shop.
  • Shop for servicing and maintenance of fully assembled GSLEP and component fabrication - 2,500 sq. ft. Assembled GSLEP is 15’ x 35’ x 25’.
  • Infrastructure collection and dispersal of power, water and waste.
  • Resident lodging.
  • 6 resident dormitory style accommodations - 120 sq. ft. each.
  • Common bathroom with bathing facilities - 120 sq. ft.
  • Common kitchen scalable for public events - 500 sq. ft.
  • Storage/support - 500 sq. ft.
  • Interpretation space / public gallery.
  • Exhibition space - 1,200 sq. ft.
  • Storage/support - 100 sq. ft.
  • Scalable event and projection space.

Accommodate 100 people for dinner and presentation screening.


  • Perceptual drawings describing synthesized ambitions and propositions. Minimum requirements include:
  • 1/8" scale building sections (cross and longitudinal) locating performance of base station between road and lake across the range of contemporary levels cycles.
  • 1/8" scale building plan(s) locating performance of base station between road and lake across the range of contemporary levels cycles.
  • regional scale perspective drawing (most likely from digital regional model -- note the word drawing instead of rendering) locating performance of base station between road and lake within the context of pre-historic Lake Bonneville.
  • 1/2” scale detail drawings locating a specific human / material / site interaction within the project.
  • additional detail drawings necessary to describe ambitions and propositions.
  • Experiential models of various scales and performative investigations. Minimum requirements include:
  • 1/8" scale building model within the analog site model(s) locating performance of base station between road and lake across the range of contemporary levels cycles.
  • study models necessary to describe ambitions and propositions.
  • Sketch model evolution within the daily practice apparatus.
  • Process studies and prints -- including precedents and site conditions.
