Oral Presentation: Domestic Challenges

Prompt: Create and orally present a digital slide show of your term paper. For the presentation include researched images and self authored drawings and images, that outline that stated of current obstacles for domestic architecture within Latin America. Utilize your drawings and diagrams to describe specific spatial, material, social, and/or environmental contributions. Compliment drawings and diagrams with your researched images. Presentations will range from 15 - 20 minutes.

Term Paper and Project: Domestic Challenges

Prompt: Write a concluding essay on the opportunities and challenges the domestic architecture from Essay 2 faces in Latin America faces today. Describe these conditions in terms of material, social, and cultural factors. Draw comparisons between your assigned project from Essay 2 and the domestic works by Elemental, Pezo von Ellrichshausen and/or Smiljan Radic. Critique the role of the precedent domestic strategy by referring to the current conditions and obstacles outlined in the recently published United Nations Human Settlements Programme titled UN-Habitat: State of Latin American and Caribbean Cities 2012. Create at minimum two plans and one section that analyze your Essay 2 building. Additionally capture and create a series of google street collaged elevation, google street perspective, and a google aerial that gives evident to the complex environment. Compile essay and drawings in the provided InDesign template and “book binding” (perfect bound) booklet. The goal of this paper and project is to demonstrate your comprehension of current conditions impacting Latin America domestic architecture and the potential architecture has in the twenty-first century to address such issues. Additionally the goal of this paper and project is to demonstrate your graphic analysis as a designer through drawing and diagrams. Lead the essay with an exemplary first line that embodies a strong idea and taste of what is to come. Evidence of use of the writing center is required. Minimum of 2000 word count, 1.5 spacing, 8.5x11" page, 1" margin, appropriate title and name, standard MLA convention.

Essay 2: Defining Domesticity

Develop a short essay defining Latin American Domesticity per architectural, cultural, and contextual conditions. Define the typology and culture associated with assigned theme. Describe typology by way of researching an example house, presented either in the readings or lectures, and provide key spatial arrangements, contextual factors, and/or building assembly. Be sure to cite sourced information. Describe culture by identifying the individuals who inhabit the example dwellings and their context. Additionally expand upon the Oxford English Dictionary definition of “Domesticity” to define domesticity within Latin America. The goal of this essay exercise is to demonstrate your comprehension of one type of domestic architecture in Latin America by way of material, spatial, and cultural definitions. Essay 1: Politics and Architecture Techniques

Prompt: Develop an short essay on architecture modernism and Latin American politics that focuses on a building technique in relationship to political leadership. Contextualize the country’s political situation according to the colonial foundations and modern advancements. Address the government transformations and the various parties in power that determined the shape of the built environment.


Select one of the themes below from which to write your short essay. Research the country, architect, and technique. Determine and write about the political role this architecture technique had with regards to the social fabric of that country.
