Plain is More: The Struggle of Apparent Architectural and Technical Simplicity

DeA Architectes is situated in Alsace, where France meets Germany and Switzerland. It was founded in 2007 by Guillaume Delemazure, a former associate of the office Herzog & de Meuron. The technical and artistic tradition of this trinational area has deeply influenced the work of the office, which combines an apparent volumetric simplicity with the integration of an energetic concept and the sophistication of the building envelop. The design process of the office focuses on an intense collaboration between the consultants of the planning team and uses model making, prototyping and material experiment.

DeA architectes has delivered projects in many domains such as housing, education, culture and offices. The office currently works on large-scale cultural projects such as the Unterlinden Museum in Colmar, in collaboration with Herzog & de Meuron, as well as the new biomedical research laboratories of the university of Strasbourg.

- Arts Festival [EXHIBITION]

Maria Perbellini, Christian R. Pongratz and Upe Flueckiger from the College, together with the renowned artists Shannon Cannings, Carol Flueckiger as well as Will Cannings and the emerging Flatlands dance group under the guidance of Genevieve Durham DeCesaro, as well as the popular musicians Andy Wilkinson and Michael Allen, partnered up for a design and event spectacle to re-vitalize Ave J in Lubbock. The design schemes were presented at the Lubbock Arts Festival on the weekend of April 8-10. Collaborating were also the students from the Perbellini studio and the Pongratz studio. On Saturday the public and kids were invited to contribute their ideas in form of models and painted artifacts to the scaled plans of Ave J, which turned out to be a very family attractive spectacle. The interdisciplinary collaboration culminated on the weekend also in a dance music event engaging the large design artefacts distributed throughout the courtyard. Accompanied by the soundmix of musician Michael Allen, the Flatlands Dance Group performed several times during the Arts Festival in front of a large crowd with their artistic dance interpretation of the proposed cultural changes in the project for Ave J.

Dwayne Oyler lecture is sponsored by the College of Architecture as part of the series Material Ecologies.
Dwayne received a Bachelor of Architecture from Kansas State University and a Master of Architecture from Harvard University Graduate School of Design. He was awarded the Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill Traveling Fellowship in 1996. In 2000, Dwayne, along with Jenny Wu, established the office of Oyler Wu Collaborative, currently based in Los Angeles. The office thrives on the utilization of diverse methodologies that range from new design and fabrication technologies to material and structural experimentation. The office insists on an intense hands-on approach to their work with the belief that a lack of conventional separation between the architectural and construction fields provides for a more natural extension of the design process

- SUSTAINABLE CABIN [PROJECT]

Upe Flueckiger terminated successfully the research project on the sustainable cabin. The project involved a large amount of students in our product design courses and proved to be a successful didactic experience, because of the hands-on approach. Inspired by Henry David Thoreau’s cabin at Walden Pond and Le Corbusier’s Cabanon in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin in Southern France, the Sustainable Cabin, a prefab dwelling created to test and quantify sustainable architectural concepts, and is Texas Tech’s first built project. The project is a study of minimal spatial needs for living, as well as a laboratory for testing and measuring the performance of green systems, such as photovoltaics, compost toilets, and rainwater harvesting. Texas Tech’s College of Visual and Performing Arts contributed the cabin’s art.
