PICK UP ALL DRAWINGS FOR PROF. ALFORD'S SECTION

All remaining drawings have been laid out in the studio space to be picked up before 12.00P NOON, FRIDAY MAY 14. The room will be cleaned after that date, so be sure to retrieve your work as soon as possible before this time. Some work has been retained for the college's archive.

Be courteous to your classmates while sorting through the piles, and keep the sections neatly separated.

The final assignment has been posted and is due at the beginning of class on Thursday April 29. Please refer back to Presentation 03 to determine which axonometric system you will choose.

Exercise 04 - 3D v.02 >> Isometric Projection

Exercise 04 has been posted and is due at the beginning of class on Thursday, April 22, 2010. Experimentation is highly encouraged. We will be taking a progress grade and continue work on Tuesday.

Exercise 02 - Getting to Know You

Exercise 02 has been posted, and is due at the beginning of class on Thursday, April 8. You have a slightly compressed schedule in the third rotation, so it is important that you work hard to complete this first assignment in the given time. Take full advantage of class time to make progress and ask questions of your TAs while they are available.

Exercise 01 - Collection

Exercise 01 has been posted for the final rotation. Your TAs and I have chosen a new group of buildings for you to investigate through drawing. You must research these buildings intensely over the weekend - we will begin drawing next week and you can only draw what you know.

Exercise 05 - 3D v.03 >> Axonometric Composite

The final exercise, Exercise 05, has been posted. Please read the brief carefully as you have a lot of freedom and choices to make in setting up this drawing. Refer to the diagram on page two of the brief for some example drawing operations, and remember to refer back to the previous presentations to establish your axonometric systems.

Careful execution and a high level of experimentation and investigation-through-drawing are expected in this exercise.

Your progress will be graded on Thursday, March 25. The final drawing is due at the beginning of class on Tuesday, March 30.

Exercise 04 - 3D v.02 >> Isometric Projection

Exercise 04 has been posted and is due at the beginning of class Tuesday, March 23. Please remember that all of these drawings will be proper symmetrical isometric projections, full scale on every axis, with the angle between axes being 120 degrees. You must incorporate on of the three operations listed in the exercise description. Experimentation in what you draw and how you draw it is encouraged.

Exercise 03 will be posted later tonight, and will be introduced after the pinup on Tuesday March 2. Part A will be due Thursday March 4, and Part B will be due the following Tuesday, March 9 at the beginning of class.

Group 02 - Introduction

As mentioned previously, you should have everything on the materials list in class tomorrow, Tuesday February 23. You should also purchase a lead pointer (cylindrical sharpener pictured above), and a thick smooth white or light-colored sheet of museum board or chipboard to re-surface your desktop.

Exercise 05 - 3D v.03 >> Axonometric Composite

Exercise 05 has been posted. You must read the exercise from start to finish, so you don't miss any important details. You will be graded on this assignment as it develops at the beginning of each of the next three classes.

The exercise includes an important diagram of potential drawing operations to include in your explorations. This is not an exhaustive list, so you should feel free to interpret any of the techniques therein as well as invent your own techniques.

Exercise 04 - 3D v.02 >> Isometric Projection

Exercise 04 has been posted. Follow the instruction in Exercise 04, and refer to Presentation 03 for more information. You are to construct an isometric projection of your building (more requirements in the .pdf).

This is the standard, full-scale isometric drawing that I constantly referred to as 'convenient' and showed up several times in the presentation. This is NOT any of the other varieties of axonometric projections discussed. We will get to those, but these drawings will all be set up the same way.

Exercise 04 is due at the beginning of class on Tuesday, February 09, 2010

Exercise 03 - 3D v.01 >> Oblique Projection UPDATE

Both parts of Assignment 03 are still due Tuesday, February 2 at the beginning of class. Part B is an oblique projection of your choice. Choose from the types illustrated in Presentation 02. It's supposed to be confusing, work through it, talk to each other.

Exercise 03 - 3D v.01 >> Oblique Projection

Assignment 03 is posted. Part A is due at the beginning of class on Thursday, January 28. Part B will be discussed on Thursday and be due at the beginning of class on Tuesday, February 02.

In general the class as a whole needs to keep the lead sharper, and shift towards harder leads. Build up the drawings with the construction lines, learn the building through drawing.

Material List Addition

I just added a very important item to the materials list: Lead Pointer. This is the cylindrical device in the banner images above - it sharpens lead in lead holders. Critical to producing crisp, accurate drawings.

On Drawing

The two-dimensional representation of three-dimensional space is fundamental to the practice of architecture. The intellectual challenge of the architect, whose mind is always working in spatial terms, is to convey the intelligence of spatial ideas through drawing. Students will be introduced to the technique and history of axonometric projection and produce an axonometric reading of a canonical work of architecture.

Several readings will be assigned and discussed in an online format, informing the vocabulary and tone of the work. These readings are not secondary, optional or easy, and the resulting discussions will be responses to the text – not paraphrasing of the text.

This exercise is about production and intellectual investigation of the act of drawing three-dimensional space and three-dimensional ideas. Work through your hands – always be drawing.
