ALL MUST WEAR BLACK

This Tuesday we will be exhibiting your SPACE*SUITS to the rest of the 1412 class. It is important that you all wear BLACK, head to toe with no logos. In the same way that it is important to take photos of your modules against a consistent neutral background, your SPACE*SUIT will look best against a consistent and neutral set of clothing. We will be taking note of those who do not dress correctly.

UNIT 03 / AFTERNOON SECTION

Make sure you bring several different types of PLIERS (tools) to use to manipulate and work with the WIRE HANGERS for tomorrows class. This is a requirement, so make sure you have both wire hangers and pliers at the beginning of class tomorrow. If you do not have your materials in class you will be asked to leave until you get the materials and will be marked absent.

--Craig Dixon 18:40, 31 March 2010

UNIT 03 / AFTERNOON SECTION

Material = Wire Coat Hangers

You need to bring in 40-50 Wire Coat Hangers for class on Thursday. There are a variety of places that you can get them (listed below), but one thing you need to be sure of is that they are are very similar and the same color.

You will be required to have 40-50 for Thursday but remember you will need many more of these for the duration of the unit so get as many as you can.

Option 01: Wagner Supply Co | 925 East 66th Street | Lubbock, TX | (806) 747-2877

Google Maps Link

They sell wire hangers here in bulk. They come in a case of 500 for $35.00 this is a good option if you want to split the cost with a classmate.

You can purchase them at Walmart or Target but not very many for very cheap.

Option 02: Dry Cleaners. You can call them ahead of time and explain to them what you need the hangers for and they should be willing to help you out. I have called a few around town and they seemed willing to donate the extra hangers they had or were willing to sell them to you for a reasonable price.

Option 03: Thrift Stores. When the Dry Cleaners have a large quantity of extra hangers they donate them to Goodwill and other thrift stores so you should be able to convince the thrift stores to donate them to you or purchase them as well.

Obviously the cheaper options are 02 or 03 so if you use these options make sure you find as many as you can and the wire hangers need to be very similar.

Hangers and Reeds

In case you did not catch the announcement Thursday. The New Materials are going to be reeds for the morning class and wire hangers for the afternoon section. New students make sure that you bring in your hangers or reeds to class on Thursday. If you do not have your materials in class you will be asked to leave until you get the materials and will be marked absent.

Also, you should bring in a VARIETY of FASTENERS to class. Envision what objects, materials could be used to connect your bags (components) together. NO GLUE.

'SPACE*WALK on Thursday

A reminder about displaying your work on Thursday. You should wear only ALL BLACK so that your SPACE*SUIT is the focal point when you present your project on the runway. Continue to take lots of photographs of your work.

You should also prepare a "3-5 SENTENCE" description of the work you have done on your SPACE*SUIT. This description should explain why you chose the module and fasteners that you used and how these modules came together into your final constructed SPACE*SUIT. Be prepared to verbally present this 3 sentence description.

STUDIO CLEANUP

You will all notice that Professor Rex, the TA's and myself have moved some of the work down to the main floor to be exhibited for the accreditation. If you are walking past, make sure to show people what you have been working on. Take pictures, enjoy!

Now we need to get studio cleaned up to make room for the next rotation. All of the cups, straws and fasteners need to be removed from studio ASAP. Ideally you should recycle what you can. Collect all of your fasteners into bags and either give them to someone else or keep them for another project. I believe all of your cups and straws could probably be recycled. Remove the fasteners and then gather and crush the cups/straws into small blocks. You could take these to the recycling bins near Lowe's at 26th Street and Canton Ave. If you need to dispose of your work, again crush it into small blocks and place it into the appropriate receptacle.

WOULD YOU LIKE PAPER OR PLASTIC?

New students make sure that you bring in 50 bags to class on Tuesday. If you do not have your materials in class you will be asked to leave until you get the materials and will be marked absent.

Also, you should bring in a VARIETY of FASTENERS to class. Envision what objects, materials could be used to connect your bags (components) together. NO GLUE.

SPACE*SUIT PORTRAITS

I have your SPACE*SUIT portraits ready for download. There are two different ZIP files that can be downloaded. One is ALL of the straw suits and the other is ALL of the cup suits. You will need to download the ZIP files and then browse the contents to find your portrait. You can download these and add them to your CATALOG if you wish. I left the images the original size so the downloads may take a while.

CATALOG*TEMPLATE

The template for your catalog is available for download on the left. The file is a WORD document and has examples of where the images and text should be placed. These example images and text should be removed and replaced with your own work. There is a footer place holder that should be filled with your Lastname, Firstname.

Make sure to bring in a few printed pages to class on Tuesday 16, 2010 so you can get some feedback on what you have done from your TA's.

EXERCISE SS - STAGE 1 DUE ON TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 2, 2010

Download the SPACE*SUIT exercise on the LEFT. Make sure to thoroughly read the project brief. The items listed in STAGE 1 on the right hand column are all due at the beginning of class on the 2nd of February. REMEMBER, we are dealing with components, fasteners and most importantly MODULES. Your SPACE*SUIT constructions should be composed of a series of many, many MODULES connected together.

--Zach Pauls 1:41, 29 January 2010

EXERCISE C - DUE AT THE BEGINNING OF CLASS ON THURSDAY, JANUARY 28, 2010

Download the latest exercise on the LEFT. Make sure to read the project brief and pay attention to some of the subtle changes to the constructing and documentation of your work.

--Zach Pauls 8:41, 26 January 2010

COMPONENT CONTAINERS (cardboard box)

It's strongly recommended that you get a Component Container so you can begin to collect and store your different configurations in your studio workspace. There are going to be a lot of models constructed and this way you can keep your configurations safe and grouped together.

Where to buy: Office Depot (University & 50th) Size: 23 x 23 x 20

Get as close to this size as you can. Bigger = Better. Remember you are going to be storing a lot of your components in these containers.

--Craig Dixon 12:12, 25 January 2010

EXERCISE B - DUE AT THE BEGINNING OF CLASS ON TUESDAY, JANUARY 26, 2010

This second exercise will require you to develop revised ways of connecting your components together. Use a variety of fastener types by making 10 different connections now using five components for each connection iteration.

--Zach Pauls 02:11, 19 January 2010 (UTC)

NO GLUE

Absolutely no Glue, Cement, Epoxy can be used for this assignment. The pieces should not be welded, bonded, glued, fused together in any way. It is important that the pieces are connected together using your invented/borrowed/modified FASTENERS.

--Zach Pauls 11:11, 19 January 2010 (UTC)

EXERCISE A - DUE AT THE BEGINNING OF CLASS ON THURSDAY, JANUARY 21, 2010

This first exercise will require you to develop multiple ways of connecting your components together. Use a variety of fastener types by making 10 different connections using only two components for each connection iteration.

Establish an “ACTION” word that best describes each connection type you invent. Name each connection type.

Here are some CONNECTION PROCEDURES that you can use to fasten your components together.

CLIP, LAP, STITCH, CRIMP, INSERT, STICK, STACK, SQUISH, WRAP, TIE, TUCK, TWIST, SLIP, PINCH, STRETCH, SLIDE, SNAP, FOLD, SNIP, BEND…etc.

How can you make a connection that EXPRESSES any of these “ACTION” words?

com⋅po⋅nent  [kuhm-poh-nuhnt, kom-] –noun 1. a constituent part; element; ingredient.

fas⋅ten⋅er  [fas-uh-ner, fah-suh-] –noun 1. any of various devices for fastening. 2. any of various devices, as a snap or hook and eye, for holding together two objects or parts sometimes required to be separate, as two edges or flaps of a piece of clothing. 3. a worker who fastens things together.

--Zach Pauls 02:11, 19 January 2010 (UTC)

Beginnings

This section will focus on CONSTRUCTING. We will be constructing many, many, many constructs during our nine class mini-section. It will be essential that you all engage in the ITERATIVE design process that we will utilize to develop our models. Initially we will select a COMPONENT that will be CONNECTED to another COMPONENT with various FASTENERS. These ASSEMBLIES will become a MODULE. We will then CONNECT multiple MODULES together to create a SYSTEM for constructing larger MODULES. This will be repeated and then repeated.
