Studio Statement

Once there were brook trout in the streams in the mountains. You could see them standing in the amber current where the white edges of their finds wimpled softly in the flow. They smelled of moss in your hand. Polished and muscular and torsional. On their backs were vermiculate patterns that were maps of the world in its becoming. Maps and mazes. Of a thing which could not be put back. Not be made right again. In the deep glens where they lived all things were older than man and they hummed of mystery.
Cormac McCarthy, The Road. (New York: Vintage, 2006). ISBN 9780307277923

This section of ARCH 5901 will design a transportation education center, a trucker school, on Interstate 40 in Amarillo, Texas. The center will be augmented by a bio-diesel truck stop with convenience store and local food diner. The elements of the program will be developed as an integrated whole and the site will be viewed as both a particular piece of land in Amarillo and the long line of Interstate 40 bridging the width of the continent from Barstow, California, to Wilmington, North Carolina. An understanding of transportation infrastructure and the evolution from rail transit to distributed trucking provides another baseline. As does popular culture and the role of the truck and the road in the American psyche.
