CRAFT MATTERS



Studio Clean Out

Reminder that everyone will be collecting their work after 5:00pm today. In the process please also clean out the studio of all materials, tools, and trash. We need to leave the room clean and faculty are responsible for making sure that happens. Will be a drag if it comes to that. So please everyone pitch in and help with the effort. The studio needs to be clear by the end of next Thursday, 15 May.

Review Reminders

In preparation of our final review on Thursday please review the details of Project 3j including the compact disc documenting all work from 1412 -- Project 0, 1, 2, and 3. It is just a simple collection of organized files -- ideally in subfolders with appropriate file names.

Also it will be great if the studio can be straightened up prior to class -- trash removed, personal items stored or in clear piles/locations, general chaos minimized. We will consolidate the desk locations at the start of class to make room for the review.

Wiki pages should be complete for grading by noon on Friday 2 May and all work must remain on the hung until 5pm Friday 9 May. Please arrange to collect your work shortly thereafter.

Project 3 Review Pinup

We will review all the work from Project 3 on Thursday 1 May 2014. However, we will take part of class on Tuesday 29 April 2014 to pin up the work. The evolution and trajectory of the project will be part of the conversation. In addition to bringing all your work be sure to have enough push pins to properly hang your work. Be sure your name and project number is written lightly in pencil on the back of each work.

Just like for project 2, name labels have been very precisely placed in order to facilitate the pinup process. All gaps shown are 1/4". If you do not have sufficient space, double check to make sure your gaps are of appropriate dimension. Leave the labels exactly where they are. Photo assignments will be stacked together, with the most recent on top. Multiple places have been provided for assignments 3g1 and 3f1, with the preferred order (if fewer than the provided number of spots) indicated by tone. If you have more iterations than there are spots, then stack additional drawings behind your preferred 2 or 3 selected. Pin the top corners, but not the bottom corners of this stack. Please ensure that plan sections and cross sections align with one another and are oriented appropriately. Place your model on the ground directly in front of your pinup space.


Due to final reviews being conducted throughout the college, no 1412 students will be pinning up in the hallway on the 4th floor. Sections 01, 02, 03, and 06 will pin up in the room. Sections 04, 05, and 07 will pin up in the 6th floor hallway. As usual, name tags are in alphabetical order within sections. The gallery will not be used.

Admission into the Professional Program -- Second Year

Information about the process and requirements for applying to the professional program (i.e.: second year) can be found at Comprehensive Review page and by talking with the advisors on the 10th floor. Be sure to review the Comprehensive Review Timeline for signup and submission dates. Sign up for the written exams, that occur this weekend, are available April 9-111.

Lecture tonight!!! 5:30pm in the Architecture Gallery - It's a Happening!

Victor "Trey" Trahan - founder and principal from Trahan Architects will be speaking this evening about his firm's work. They have done some really great work in recent years, specifically the Holy Rosary Center [very stereotomic], and the Louisiana State Museum [hybrid tectonic and stereotomic], and a beautiful house in the Lower Ninth Ward. You all should go and ask him questions about how he approaches and makes decisions on tectonics and stereotomics in his work. Seriously.

Project 2 Review Pinup

We will review all the work from Project 2 on Thursday 27 March 2014. For this you need to bring all of the prior work completed during the project so it can be pinned up, discussed, and graded. Likewise, your two longitudinal sections will be stacked. Please ensure that plans align with the longitudinal section and the longitudinal section aligns with the cross section. Place your model on the ground directly in front of your pinup space.


Once again, 3 students from each section have been selected to pin up in the gallery on the ground floor. These are not necessarily the same students as for project 1, so please check the 4th floor for your name before going down to the gallery. The rest of you will pin up on the 4th floor near where your section would normally pin up, with the exception of section 6, which will be by the elevators.

Wiki Uploads

Just like you wouldn't pin a drawing up in the wrong orientation, please refrain from uploading images in the wrong orientation. 24" x 36" axonometrics should not be landscape or upside-down. Longitudinal sections should not be portrait and transverse sections should be rotated correctly as well, even though this does not affect the final dimensions.

Rotating an image requires the least effort of all image editing operations. Please take the 2 seconds to do it before uploading.

Revisit the studio truisms and remember a sketchbook is far more beneficial in class than a mobile phone. Keep the phone in your bag and the sketchbook in your hands.

Studio Culture -- Dos

This morning it was learned that not all of us are respecting each others property and work. Supplies and tools going missing when someone steps out of the room is problematic on many levels. Firstly there are our studio rules, truisms and ethics. However, more importantly it is a sign that we are not working collectively to build a unified studio culture that supports everyone, engages in productive dialog, and strives to build a great school of architecture. These aspirations benefit us all and keep the studio a productive and healthy work place. Theft will not be tolerated. We should rely on collective eyes to look out for everyone and we should each look after our belongings so they are not mistaken as abandoned. Please remember the first studio culture note below and help keep the space clear of trash and organized so confusion doesn't obscure our goals.

Studio Culture

It's great that our studio is being used vigorously, however it will be better if we all clean up after ourselves. Beyond wayward bits of chipboard we are seeing empty snack wrappers and drink containers. Please do your part to keep the room in a productive state where work can be the first thing that happens when we arrive --- instead of clearing a surface to make work. . . thanks.

Aspirational Studio Work

I have just finished linking several students' projects to the Aspirational Studio Work page. This is a good place to look if you are unsure of what a successful drawing/model/print may look like. This is also, as the name may suggest, a page to aspire to be a part of. But remember that to be included, your work must be uploaded to the Wiki, which is a task that has evaded many of you. Images should also be appropriately rotated, cropped, framed, scanned, etc. Most, although not necessarily all, included work has also adhered strictly to the guidelines.

To those of you who are represented on this page's first edit, congratulations. However, as the saying goes, don't rest on your laurels. Also understand that the work displayed is not perfect, ideal, optimal, or even necessarily A-quality work. But each piece shown does demonstrate one or more valuable characteristics that you all can learn from. The key is to train your eye and mind to pick up on what those characteristics are. I will be updating this page regularly as the projects progress, so it may be a valuable page to "watch".

I have also uploaded many images to the Studio Documentation page, which is intended to keep a visual record of the culture of the studio. You might enjoy finding yourself on this page.

Introduction

Greetings and welcome to the official web base for 2014 ARCH 1412. This is a very unique and important course within the College of Architecture as it marks the threshold of the professional degree program. It will be a very intense and demanding course where you will learn the rigors and grace of studio culture and if you are as Samuel Mockbee once said Snake Bit by the pursuit of architecture. Building a great school of architecture requires determination and focus in the studio, in what we make, and how we communicate. There are over 100 students in this studio divided between morning and afternoon sections, there is five instructors, and seven teaching assistants. You will learn from everyone in this studio, including your classmates, and ideally everyone in the building. This class is performance based and will be assessed by your production and engagement on a day to day basis. We all look forward to working with you and getting this freight train moving.

Creating your Student Page

To complete Project 1a everyone will need to create their own student page as discussed on the first day of class. To do this open two browser windows. One with 2014 ARCH 1412 Sample Student Page and the other with 2014 ARCH 1412 Section Rosters (or you could open your individual section roster). Login into the wiki (remember it takes clicking login twice to refresh the page - see How to log in for detailed instructions). Locate your name on the roster page once you are logged into the wiki. Click the red (or blue if you've already begun editing your page) link for your name. Select the option to edit the page. Move to the other browser window with the Sample Student Page, select edit to see the wiki source, select all of the wiki source and copy. Toggle back to your page and paste all the content into your page from the Sample Student Page. After reading the note at the top of the page and following its instructions, delete it. Edit the information as necessary on your page so the links are correct. If links to file names or pages don't match exactly they will not work. Verify all your links are working prior to completing the assignment.

Wiki Log In

If you have trouble logging in to the wiki, the issue is that access to the site log-in is limited to people in the architecture community. Since you are new to the college some may not yet be listed in that group due to your major declaration or other issues. This is not a problem as you can be quickly added to that group by Denny Mingus on the 9th floor. To be nice to Denny and make it easier for him to add names please email your Studio Assistant and your instructor (so we all are on the same page) with your eRaider username and a note that you are in 2014 ARCH 1412 having trouble logging in. We will send Denny batches of names on a daily basis until this is resolved. Once your user name has been added to the group you will be able to log in with your eRaider credentials. Please keep your Studio Assistant informed .

Page Watching

Once you are logged in you have the ability to 'Watch' a page to stay tuned to changes on that page. This can be very helpful for basic announcements on this page, projects postings, and schedule changes. To do this you need to be sure the wiki knows you email and that you have checked the appropriate boxes to have emails sent on the 'my preferences' page. A link to 'my preferences' will be visible in the gray sidebar on the left once you are logged into the site. See Help:Contents#Setting_Preferences_for_Watching_Pages for more info.

Retaining and Preserving your Work

Do not discard any of your work for this class before the end of the semester. It will be used to evaluate your performance in the studio -- project grading -- and for creating a portfolio for admission into the professional degree program of the college. Even after submitted assignments have been returned, you need to keep, catalog and care for each project component. Just as the digital copies will remain on the wiki for viewing, reference and grading purposes - you need to store all physical copies of your work in a portfolio or other carrying case to ensure their safe keeping. Remember that each work piece should be labeled on the back with your name, project number, section number and 2014 ARCH 1412. It is strongly recommended that you keep your work organized and cataloged even after the semester has concluded for future portfolios, interviews, possible exhibitions.
