Media Elective, ARCH 4341 Spring 2016

Media Elective examining material logics, spatial composition, and iterative design process following William Carlos Williams statement "no ideas but in things." A working method will evolve additively with wood and composite materials to create a mold bodies or patterns to cast spatial containers in plaster. Performance will be evaluated with light tests measured with photography and drawing.

Influences include:

Stereotomy was at the very edge of architecture. It was also at the edge of mathematical geometry, at the edge of technical drawing, of structural theory, practical masonry, and military engineering. Within architecture, it is impossible to periodize for the same reason. It was on the edge of classicism and every other stylistic category----baroque, rococo, neoclassicism, Gothic, and even modern. From within each category the art of stonecutting could easily be dismissed, since it had no central importance to any. It flourished only where definitions blurred, where on thing began to glide off into others; where structural theory met technical drawing, where neoclassical blended with rococo, where mathematical geometry came into contact with architectural composition, and so on. This is what is remarkable about it: being peripheral to each, it was shared by all, like an unrecognized border joining many diverse regions.
