Quiz average is entered as a single grade in this average.
A minimum of.4 pages of sketches & notes is required per week, see sketch journal handout/insert for suggestions and evaluation
A (9.0 - 10) excellent work exceeds objectives, very high in originality, extremely well conceived and executed. “A” is for AWESOME. B (8.0 - 8.9) good work, meets objectives well, is original, well conceived and executed C (7.0 - 7.9) average work, mediocre, meets objectives, fair in concept and execution D (6.0- 6.9) inferior works, basically complete, but falls short of objectives and needs work in terms of idea and execution F (below 6.0) failing work, significantly incomplete, does not meet objectives and is poorly conceived and/or executed
Work is critiqued and graded regularly throughout the term. Projects should be ready for ‘in-progress-critiques’ at least one studio day before the due date...Projects are turned in on time, completed and labeled before class and presented ready for the due date critiques, clean, and undamaged. Work is not graded on a curve but on quality, meeting requirements and timely completion. There will be no late work accepted during the last two weeks of the semester. Grade sheets with requirements, expectations and general comments accompany most of the projects. The requirements should be addressed. In general, there may be a ‘must include’ but is‘not-limited-to’ approach on the assigned projects. If a student has ideas that vary somewhat from the assignment, please have a sketch or concept and adequate research if necessary to present and consult with the instructor for approval. The instructor is available for individual instruction and feedback at regular intervals during class. A quiz will be given at the beginning of class every other week on the 2nd class of the week. In other words expect the quiz every other Thursday. The majority of these consist of spelling ten words and writing the correct definitions from the glossary in the back of the text book. The quiz, on notebook paper which the instructor will provide, is printed in block vertical capital letters for practice. The words are in the order given in the text. First quiz is first ten words and definitions. Second quiz will be the next ten. The alternate open day one week after the quiz is available for makeup. Students who are in class are required ‘ready- or- not’ to take the first quiz. The make up quiz time is intended to improve scores if necessary. It is not intended as a procrastination opportunity. Only 2 make ups will be allowed per student during the semester. Students are responsible for listening to oral announcements and reading notes written for the class on the board or newsprint pad on the wall. Students are expected to independently take notes as needed. Be alert and aware and in attendance during each class: this is NOT a distance learning class. A quiz will be given at the beginning of class every other week on the 2nd class of the week. In other words expect the quiz every other. Wed. or Thurs depending on which days your class meets. Each quiz consists of spelling ten words and writing the correct definitions from the glossary in the back of the text book. We start with the first ten words. The quiz, on notebook paper which the instructor will provide, is printed in block vertical capital letters for practice. The words are in the order given in the text. See page 50 in text for example of lettering. Additional sources are available for help if you are interested. height & spacing and consistent line weight count. See Francis D. K. Ching’s Architectural Graphics. At midterm, brief individual meetings with each student will be held as sketchbooks are assessed to discuss general work and progress. Students may also meet with instructor at any time preferably by appointment to discuss progress, goals or evaluation of work. Fairbetter students are always welcome to attend any of my other sections of same class for further instruction and feedback or studio work time. All work should be available for viewing at midterm (do not lose it), and students keep all work collected safely in portfolios at least until the end of the term. Outside of class each week, students should be prepared to spend time in productive work (may be considerably more depending on skills and work habits). Plan for at least 3-6 hours of work per week outside of class for studio work and sketchbook. Interior design students are required to have original works and proof of grades on projects for their 2nd year. Be responsible with your work. Architecture students may plan to digitally document work during the semester to avoid rushed portfolio preparation later. ALL PORTFOLIOS, DRAWINGS AND SUPPLIES LEFT BEHIND AFTER THE END OF FINALS WILL BE DISPOSED OF. Make sure you pick yours up! SKETCH JOURNALSLABEL THE FRONT COVER WITH YOUR NAME AND THE CLASS AND SECTION. If you keep several, label them ‘1 of 3’, ‘2 of 3’ and ‘3 of 3.’ This will insure that all are credited & counted at end of semester. A sketch journal should be brought to every class. They will be collected and evaluated at midterm and at the end of the term. They demonstrate independent development of the concepts, techniques, and skills taught in class as well as personal creative studies and interests. Writing and sketching may be assigned at certain times, but the sketch journal is primarily the individual student’s tool. A minimum of 4 pages per week is expected. A sheet of suggested studies will be given out and should be permanently attached in the front cover of the sketchbook. This sheet will also serve as the evaluation page for the sketch journal at mid-term and end of semester. CLASS PARTICIPATIONParticipation refers to a behavior pattern that assists in maintaining a classroom environment conducive to learning. It includes an alert workmanlike and respectful attitude, general preparedness for working in class and active involvement in class discussion and critiques. Active participation on the part of students involves questioning, making suggestions, stating and supporting opinions, describing, interpreting, analyzing, evaluating, etc. Students should make the most out of the critiques by seeking opinions and criticism from other students and the instructor as a learning experience; feedback during critiques should be honest and tactfully direct. Compliments are appropriate. Many helpful responses are based on insightful analysis that may identify problems and weaknesses in the work that can be addressed to make stronger impressions on future works. In order to assure that all students have the opportunity to gain from time spent in class; students are to refrain from engaging in any form of distraction. Inappropriate behavior, discussion or language in the classroom shall result, minimally, in a request to leave class. Sleeping, eating meals, use of cell phones, reading newspapers, and work on assignments for another class are all discouraged. Drug use shows, don’t do it. Personal visiting is limited to break times. Collaborative work project groups are expected to stay on task. BE NICE OR LEAVE. All students are expected to assist in creating an environment conducive to learning. Your positive participation in these areas is highly valued. STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO LEAVE THE STUDIO CLEAN, WITH NO TRASH LEFT AND THE TABLES CLEANED. PLEASE RECYCLE PLASTIC AND ALUMINUM IN CONTAINERS BY THE ELEVATORS. BE CONSIDERATE TO OUR FACILITY, OTHER STUDENTS USING THE STUDIO AND TO OUR CUSTODIANS. THE SPRAY BOOTH FOR FIXATIVE OR SPRAY GLUE ETC IS IN THE MODEL SHOP, NOT IN A HALLWAY. ATTENDANCEAttendance records will be kept by means of a sign-in sheet for every class meeting. It is the student/s responsibility to sign in at the beginning of each class and keep track of his or her attendance. 2 absences will result in a letter of concern from the Dean and affects participation 3absences will drop the semester grade by a letter. 4 absences may result in a failing grade. 5 absences will result in an “F”. Excused or not, all absences count as absences, the difference is in whether a student is or is not allowed to make up the missed projects. Students are expected to be in class. THREE EARLY DEPARTURES, TARDIES, OR EXCESSIVE BREAK TIMES WILL BE CONSIDERED AS ONE ABSENCE. In the event of an absence, students are responsible for all missed information and class work, and for coming prepared to the next class. Contact two ‘buddies’ to get class notes. A student may attend the corresponding class at a different time to avoid missed studio class experience. As an example, if a student is unable to attend at the regular class time, a morning student may attend the evening class on the same day. See me ahead of time if this is not clear. In addition to contact with your colleagues in the class, you may email me if you need to. HEALTH AND SAFETY POLICYThe school of Architecture will endeavor to comply with the intent of state laws or acts and the University Health and Safety Program. Safety issues will be discussed as they arise. Use designated boxes above sinks for disposal of xacto knife blades. Use sharp blades for cutting paper and illustration boards. Handle matt cutters carefully. The Logan matt cutter is available on the 9th floor. The print lab tech has replacement blades for the cutters as needed. Some color pigments are toxic. Hands should be kept clean and food is not allowed on the table with art supplies. Under no circumstances is the spraying of aerosol adhesives, paints or fixative allowed in this building except in a spray booth. In case of fire or fire drill, this class will gather temporarily across the street by Sam’s Place until the building is Okayed by the fire department and we will return to the studio.
