Exhibit_A:

or "Architecture + Crime"

What is the connection between architecture and crime?

This connection is undeniable. If architecture is, indeed, a the definition and demarcation of places for human activities and use then those uses and most specifically activities must include criminal acts. In this studio, we are not trying to design crime<i>. Rather we are merely using such activities to inspire our thinking of how space relates to people and their uses for that space.

In this course we will take a cursory look at this connection in order to develop specific design skills and architectural knowledge for each student. Our vehicle for this will be a few segments of film from the work of acclaimed director, Alfred Hitchcock. We will use his work, most specifically how he arranged shots, created sets and told stories, to help us understand the basic design principles and their relationships to sight, action, orchestration and facilitation.

"To really appreciate architecture, you may even need to commit a murder." _Bernard Tschumi
"I prefer drawing to talking. Drawing is faster, and leaves less room for lies." _Le Corbusier
