Mission

  • To actively promote sustainable community-based design and participatory planning.
  • To advance research, education, and best practices in community design and regional architecture and planning.
  • To provide leadership and aid to traditionally under-served rural and small town communities through assessment, collaborative planning, and technical assistance.
  • To strengthen and maintain the quality of life for the people of the high plains region of West Texas and Eastern New Mexico.
  • To serve as a primary voice for policies and principles advocating and promoting positive and productive community living.



The Texas Tech Community Design Laboratory serves in the capacity of incubating projects in preparation for funding opportunities and professional services.

The Community Design Laboratory is affiliated with the Association of Community Design and the International Play Association, with interdisciplinary associations across the Texas Tech University System including the Office of Economic Development and The International Center for Arid and Semiarid Land Studies. Since 1995 the Community Design Laboratory has completed over 50 projects that include affordable housing, downtown redevelopment initiatives, educational and governmental facilities, community centers, and community and regional planning.

Consulting Design Services

Student research assistants and faculty work on a contractual basis to accomplish specific goals. Projects must be compatible with the research objectives of the Architectural Research Center, and commensurate with faculty expertise and areas of interest.

Service Learning

Students receive educational credit and the university pays faculty salaries.Financial support is secured to support operational expenses including travel, materials, and graphic reproduction. Availability depends on faculty schedules and course objectives. Priority is given to community-based projects that support the public sector.
