Topic: Advanced Poetics
Digital media is transforming the practice and teaching of design, offering new ways to see, think, study and understand architecture. This workshop explores how digital media and physical material are used interchangeably as instruments in a design environment. The computer is introduced as a tool that enables the study of modeling, space, light, shade, shadow, color, transparency, translucency, reflectivity, and texture.

The workshop uses a systematic approach inspired by principles of craftsmanship and visual perception. A series of weekly exercises explore the tactics and techniques of diagramming, analytic observation and the architectonics of space. The methodology stimulates intuition and speculation unfettered by conventions, in order to discover the unexpected that could radically alter our understanding of the practical.

Video screen discussions of student design work are supplemented by lectures and procedural demonstrations. Both analog and digital assignments are completed outside of class time.

Required Software: bonzai3d, Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.
