October 14th, 2009 @ Noon : Louden, Smith, & WhiteElizabeth Louden, PhD : "Painted Indian Cave (41BC1), Blanco County, Texas: A Study in 3D Cultural Visualization and Acoustic Mapping" Painted Indian Cave (41BC1), Blanco County, Texas: A Study in 3D Cultural Visualization and Acoustic Mapping Dr. Margaret Sabom Bruchez, Dr. Elizabeth Louden, Priscilla Murr and Joel Gordon Abstract In April 2008, the interior surface features of Painted Indian Cave (41BC1) in Blanco County, Texas were laser mapped and color photographed; the aural environment was recorded at six locations. From the spatial and aural data a digital, three dimensional, audio enhanced simulation of the single chamber cave was produced. The efforts were aimed at testing suspected relationships between solid red monochrome pictographs of supernaturals, geometrics, and bison and sounds of nearby river rapids. The art had been dated to 770± 50 years BP (Brock et al. 2006), which corresponded with the time of the reentry of bison into the southern Plains of Texas during the Late Prehistoric. The investigations demonstrated the multidisciplinary techniques and expertise necessary to document and study the aural architectures of archaeological contexts in underground environments. Digital simulations were created that enabled unlimited opportunities for future researchers to study the sonic dimensions of past human use of remote, dark and enclosed sites without subjecting the fragile resources to damage or further deterioration. The method shows promise in fields of resource analysis and monitoring, management, ligation, scientific experimentation and education.
