Editing Pages

Once you are logged in you can edit any unprotected page by clicking on the edit link in the gray side bar. The edit option will not appear for protected pages. Then complete the following:

  • Make the changes you desire to the wiki markup text. See the external links at the top of this page for wiki markup help. The syntax is pretty straightforward once you get the hang of it. Using the tool buttons over the edit box is also help. Creating new links within the wiki is as easy as putting square brackets around text. For example a link to a page called Fish Scales would look like this:
[[Fish Scales]].
If the page exists the link will be blue. If it does not it will be red. Creating links to pages that need to be created in the future is fine and a good way to start a new page. People is a link to a page that exists, where Fish Scales has yet to be created (if it's still red).
  • Use the show preview to see an unsaved rendered preview of the page. Note that it the preview is unsaved so if you navigate away from the page your changes may be lost. It is good protocol to preview before saving to catch any formatting or typographic errors.
  • Before you save enter a description in the Summary field. This will appear in the change logs and history. It is very helpful if you ever need to revisit the history of changes to the page. All edit changes are saved and identified by user.
  • Click save page to submit the new page. It will then display.

To experiment with editing use the Sandbox. It is a page you can experiment with editing a page without worry of messing anything up. Remember, the history of the wiki is always traceable so there are no mistakes that can't be undone or identified.

Creating New Pages

New pages can be created by placing wiki links to any word on an existing page (described above) or by entering the desired page name in the browser URL field. If you use the browser URL method note that multi word pages have underscores between the words by default. You will need to use them in the URL. Attempting to load a URL within the site to a page that doesn't exist will load a message about the page status and give you the option to create the page if you are logged in. Another way is to run a search for a term or phrase. If the page exists it will load or show in the results. If not the search term(s) will appear at the top of the results page in red. Clicking that red link will take you to an edit page named for the term(s). Adding content and saving the page will create it.
