Help:Page Naming Protocol

From TTU College of Architecture

Jump to: navigation, search

To be sure wiki pages have original names it will be important to develop a common naming convention. For example everyone can not use the same page called Assignment 1 for a course they are teaching. The naming of individual pages uniquely is therefore important. The name should be able to logically distinguish course sections by instructor and what year the course is taught. A standard convention will allow pages to be sorted properly.

Year CoursePrefix CourseNumber FacultyLastName
ie: [[2009 ARCH 2502 Neiman]]
Page titles, tags, and category names are case-sensitive. Semester can be one of (Fall, Spring, Summer)

Unique content connected to course pages should include reference to the course in the page name to create unique pages for that course. Relative to our example above the page for Assignment 1 could be [[2009 ARCH 2502 Neiman - Assignment 1]]

Content that can be used across many courses or sections of courses can have more open naming. For example the page ARCH 2501 links to a base page for the course that all sections and offerings can be linked to. ARCH 2501 References could contain reference materials and links for the course as a whole--rather than a particular section. Pages that relate to wider topics with relevancy to the college programs as a whole can have even more open names to allow greater access and connect-ability. For example there is a page called Links that contains an open set of resources. A page called Lubbock could contain site and environmental information about Lubbock that could be used by many courses that site projects in Lubbock. In this way we can evolve a body of knowledge over time that relates to teaching and research programming. Pages that we want to see develop remain red links until someone authors the page.

Page Renaming or Moving

Renaming an existing to a more specific name is not a problem. In the gray side bar is a link to the Move tool. It will allow you to create a new name for the page. All existing links to the page will be redirected to the new page.
