Help:Redirecting User Pages

For user who have been creating a base wiki page for your work you have have noticed that all references to pages you edit have auto links to your user page. Because of the way the system is set up this is your full name with your eraider account name in parenthesis. This is both a bit visually unsightly and also counter productive for creating links to that page. As an example my system generated user page is User:Christopher Taylor ( chritayl ). You will notice if you click on that link it will take you to the more sensible page Chris Taylor. This was accomplished by using the Move tool that appears in the gray side bar on the left. Moving a page creates an auto redirect so any future or past links to the old page automatically jump to the new location. This is particularly handy for user pages. You can do this yourself by completing the following steps (these steps also work for renaming pages to more specific and unique page names):

  1. Insure the content on the desired page location is backed up or copied (if it exists). This can be done by copying the source code to a text editor.
  2. Navigate to the base page you want to Move.
  3. Click on the Move link in the gray sidebar on the left.
  4. This will bring up the Move dialog providing warnings about page movements and giving you a field to enter the new name. In the example above the page User:Christopher Taylor ( chritayl ) was moved to Chris Taylor. It is also good protocol to provide a reason for the move, which will be stored in the edit log. This helps anyone in the future who wonders about the page movement.

That's it. Now both the auto-generated user links and any base links will lead the reader to the more sensibly named page.
