Land Arts 2009 Journey 2 Update
From TTU College of Architecture
The second journey of Land Arts 2009 from Texas Tech concluded 27 October 2009. The momentum and energy established in our fieldwork culminated in a symposium at the Land Heritage Institute in San Antonio. The itinerary of our second journey included more work sites allowing our dialog to evolve through works and actions. We continued to be visited by exceptional guests—Susannah Mira, Boyd Elder, Upe Flueckiger, Clifton Ellis, Jack Sanders, Simone Swan, Ann Reynolds, Joan Jonas, Lucy Lippard, Penelope Boyer, and Erik Knutzen among other presenters at the symposium.
We are now on campus for the remainder of the term working in the studio to resolve and finalize what began in the field. The opportunity of this return will bring new thinking to our process and be shared with a larger community in an exhibition in Lubbock at the end of the term. Stay tuned for more details on the exhibition.

Road - Playas & Hachita

On our way across southwestern New Mexico we stopped in on the former town of Playas---once a company town now a training center for law enforcement and counter terrorism training, more info. When we asked at the guard check point if there was any public interface like a visitors center we could see we were told it is a closed facility. Except that we could go to the store. Given how much Land Arts travels love road side stores we couldn't resist. While the actual store did not match up to most of our gas station experiences it was attached to a small bowling alley. Mid-morning bowling anyone? The folks working within the facility got a kick out of their visitors. As did we...
