The Master of Science in Architecture program is a graduate degree focused on research and specialization.

The Master of Science in Architecture (MS) degree is a research-based academic degree for students interested in advanced architectural studies. This degree does not prepare students to receive an architecture licensure. It is for students with an accredited professional B.Arch. or M.Arch. degree, or an approved bachelor’s degree in architecture or in another discipline (e.g., art, interior design, engineering, archaeology). Students who have non-architecture degrees and wish to enter the program, and those who do not have a basic understanding of computing and computer-assisted design skills, may be required to complete leveling work that will not accrue graduate credit toward their degree. Students will be required to complete a minimum of 30 credit hours of graduate study, and write and defend a thesis (6 hours).

Students requesting admission into the Master of Science in Architecture program must meet the entrance standards of the Graduate School and the College of Architecture. The admission application includes a portfolio of creative work (writing, design, drawing, photography, etc.) that reflects the student’s level of design interest, intellectual inquiry, and communication skills.

There are three options for Master of Science in Architecture (MS) students

  1. Master of Science in Architecture Studies.
  2. Master of Science in Architecture with specialization in Historic Preservation (HP)
  3. Master of Science in Architecture with specialization in Digital Design and Fabrication (DDF).

In addition, CoA offers graduate certificates in the following areas, and students may consider them as additional opportunities as appropriate.

  1. Historic Preservation (HP)
  2. Digital Design and Fabrication (DDF)
  3. HealthCare Facilities (HCaF) Design

Academic requirements will vary depending on the option chosen. Each candidate for the Master of Science in Architecture (MS) degree must specify the option they are interested in. After the first semester, students will be matched with a faculty member who will serve as their academic advisor and the chair of their thesis committee. The advisor will be responsible for guiding the student concerning electives, developing a thesis proposal, and selecting thesis committee members. All students seeking a degree must complete the program in residency, including the thesis. Financial assistance may be available for students applying by January 15 for admission into the program the next fall semester. There are scholarships, teaching assistantships, research assistantships, and graduate part-time instructor positions available for graduate students.

Any student enrolled at TTU in any school or college can earn a certificate, as a Bachelor, Master, or PhD degree candidate under the same guidelines above having been accepted into the certificate program offered by the College of Architecture. The certificate is awarded only after completion of a first degree. Students may take graduate courses as an undergraduate if they have less than 12 hours remaining on the completion of their degree.
